Louisiana has the highest sales tax rate in America

Louisiana’s state’s sales tax increased from four pennies to five pennies per dollar April 2016. According to the Tax Foundation, a nonprofit tax policy research organization, the combined average state and local sales tax businesses collect in Louisiana is 9.99%.  That easily secures Louisiana at the top spot in the nation for highest average sales tax rate. Along with the increase businesses and industries are also lamenting their loss of sales tax exemptions, which means they’ll pay more on the cost of utilities, raw materials and manufacturing equipment. The study by the Tax Foundation points out that sales tax differential can affect where consumers shop and can also impact decisions about where companies choose to locate.
