Various States Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday


NATIONWIDE – Several states will be having upcoming sales tax holidays. Below you will find a list of states, dates and some of the qualifying items. For more information, please visit each states’ Department of Revenue website.

VIRGINIA’S 2012’S Back to School Tax Free Weekend is scheduled for August 3 – 5. The following items will be tax exempt:

• Clothing and footwear under $100
• School supplies under $20

MARYLAND’S Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday is scheduled for August 12-18. Qualifying items will be:

• Clothing priced at $100 or less
• Footwear priced at $100 or less

MISSISSIPPI’S Tax Free Weekend is scheduled for July 29 – 30 and will be applied to the following items:

• Clothing under $100
• Shoes under $100

Items not exempt are:

• Accessories such as jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches, backpacks, briefcases and garment bags
• Skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates

and other items that can be worn on the feet but do not qualify as “shoes”

IOWA’S Tax Free Weekend is scheduled for August 3-4. Tax exemptions apply to the following items:

• Clothing under $100
• Shoes under $100.

ARKANSAS’ Tax Free Weekend is scheduled for August 4-5. Items that are tax exempt will be:

• Clothing and footwear under $100
• Accessories under $50
• School supplies

ALABAMA’S Tax Free Weekend is schedule for August 3 – 5. The following items can be purchased free of tax:

• Clothing under $100
• School supplies under $50
• Books under $30
• Computers/computer equipment under $750

Not all of Alabama’s counties and cities will be participating. Please check the state’s website for a list of counties.

FLORIDA’S Back to School Sales Tax Holiday will be held August 3 – 5. Clothing, shoes and wallets costing less than $75 and general school supplies under $15 will be available to purchase free of tax.
