Potential Sales Tax Exemption for California Women

Pink-Tax

California – On January 4, 2016, California Assembly Member Cristina Garcia introduced a bill (1561) that would make tampons and sanitary napkins exempt from sales tax. Assembly Member Garcia is passionate about the issue. “This is not insignificant to women, especially poor women on a tight budget who struggle to pay for basic necessities like a box of tampons or pads every month for their adult life,” Garcia said. “If we can’t make them free we should at least make them more affordable.” If the bill passed it’s estimated to cost the State of California 20 million in sales tax revenue.

There is a similar House Bill (272) that was presented in June 2016 in Ohio, the most recent status is a referral to Ways and Means committee in October 2015. Currently there are only 5 states that have this exemption which are Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and New Jersey.
