Emergency Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday April 22 – 24, 2023
TX: This weekend, Texas will waive sales tax on emergency preparedness supplies. For example, the three-day sales tax exempts some essential items needed during a power outage or other emergency.
Texans can buy year-round batteries at their favorite hardware store, replace last year’s blue waterproof tarp, or buy new reusable ice packs for Yeti or lunchboxes lunch. AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt or 9-volt batteries are eligible for these emergency items. Your smartphone battery is exempt, depending on your make and model. Car or boat batteries are excluded. In addition, fuel cans and flashlights that cost less than $75 are tax-free during the state sales tax exemption period. It starts at 12:01 am on Saturday, April 22, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 24.
Other items that cost less than $300 and are temporarily exempt include rescue ladders, axes, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and self-powered portable radios. Portable generators under $3,000 are the most expensive item on the duty-free list.
The Texas Comptroller’s Office estimates buyers will save nearly $2 million in state and local sales taxes during the tax holiday.
